Who We Are
We are a group of teenage youth who are attending an After School Matters program called “Law Under Curious Minds” held at Lindblom Math & Science Academy in West Englewood. We represent seven different high schools on the south side of Chicago.
This program teaches us about our human, legal, and civil rights and how we can make sure these rights are not abused. We learn about past injustices that occurred around the world, especially in Chicago and in the U.S., as well as current events where human rights are stripped from from people of color. We also learn about mental health and how to deal with trauma in our lives. Law Under Curious Minds helps reduce the frequent dehumanization of people that live in these neighborhoods, because it teaches youth how to correctly interact with law enforcement so that the police cannot abuse their rights. There is no other program in the world that teaches inner-city youth about their human rights or how to advocate for your own and others’ rights.
This is our book about human, legal, and civil rights that aims to inform people living in low- income neighborhoods about their rights and how we can unite to protect our rights. In our book, we discuss issues that we talked about during the program, as well as issues that we have brought up as important topics that people need to know about.
